Why 2006 Was a Turning Point for Georgian Wine

Georgian Wine

Every wine-producing country has a turning point that reshapes its trajectory. For Georgia, that moment arrived in 2006.

At Corus Imports, we work with producers who emerged from this pivotal era stronger, more export-ready, and more committed to quality than ever before—and it's a story worth understanding for anyone building a Georgian wine program today.

A Crisis That Reshaped an Industry

In 2006, Russia—historically the destination for the vast majority of Georgian wine exports—banned all imports of Georgian wine, citing quality and safety concerns. Before the ban, a large majority of Georgia's wine exports went to Russia, making it by far the country's most important market. Losing that market overnight forced Georgian producers to confront a difficult reality: much of what had been shipped to Russia for decades hadn't needed to meet the quality and consistency standards expected in Western markets.

How Georgian Winemakers Responded

Rather than collapsing, the industry used the crisis as motivation to modernize:

  • Producers invested in updated equipment and winemaking technology

  • Quality control tightened significantly across the industry

  • Winemakers began actively pursuing markets in Europe, Asia, and North America

  • Georgia diversified away from dependence on a single buyer

Many winemakers who lived through the period have described the embargo as an unintentional catalyst that forced long-overdue improvements in quality and marketing.

The Long-Term Result

The years following the ban saw Georgian wine expand into dozens of new export markets, diversify its customer base, and build the reputation for quality and authenticity that has helped fuel renewed international interest in Georgian wine today—including in the U.S. market that Corus Imports serves.

A Foundation Corus Imports Was Built On

Corus Imports has been importing Georgian wine to the U.S. since the years following this pivotal shift, working with producers who emerged from that period with a stronger commitment to quality and export readiness.
